This off-off Broadway play by Paula Vogel is a dark
comedy about a single mother, Charlene, who writes
erotic women's scripts as a means of supporting herself
and her two teenage children. The daughter is
rebellious and disrespqectful; the son is confused and
full of anger at the absence of his father (Clyde).
Elias plays Clyde, Charlene's
abusive, alcoholic ex-husband, who manages to come back
into her life, even with a restraining order against
him. The play is told from Charlene's perspective, and
as she types her scripts, we hear the voices of her
'characters' in her head acted out simultaneously. Her
real life comes into focus with the arrival of Clyde,
and scenes from the past and present are replayed in her
head, to comedic and then tragic results.
This play was performed at the
Peter Norton Theater, 555 West 42nd Street, through May
1, 2005.
